Monarch - South Central Colorado
Set high above the scenic Arkansas Valley and located amidst the rugged Sawatch Mountain Range just east of Gunnison on Highway 50 along the banks of the South Arkansas River, Monarch is the epitome of Colorado towns. Nestled between Poncha Springs and Waunita Hot Springs, near St. Elmo mining ghost town, Monarch offers an outdoor Colorado experience. Monarch Ski Area accumulates more than 350 feet of powder snow each winter. The diversity of terrain makes it a wonderful place for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers. Also, for those seeking more powder, checkout the Great Divide Snow Tours for back country skiing. This true winter wonderland also has cross-country ski & snowmobile trails such as Old Monarch Pass Road. In summer enjoy the Monarch Crest Scenic Tramway that takes passengers 700 feet to the elevation of 12,012, to see a panoramic view of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. There are plenty on hiking trails to experience wildlife and the great outdoors. Anglers will enjoy the many trout streams in San Isabel National Forest. For other fun in Monarch, experience rafting, mountain biking, gold panning, 4WD trails and Ghost towns.
